KR05: Loan Coal Religion9/13/08

Lone Coal Religion is the idea that once you are a Christian it is not necessary to be part of a church. After all, if a church can’t save you why join one?

We’ll answers questions such as:

Was the early church organized?
What benefit is there to being part of an organized church?
Does God expect me to be part of a faulty church?

God’s Antidote: Not Alone But Together

KR04: Multiple Personalities Religion

KR04: Multiple=8/23/08

Multiple Personalities Religion is where our Christianity is just tacked on as one in a long list of “personalities” that describe who we are. Sure we’re Christians but we are also a lot of other great things. What gets our primary attention is determined by what we see as most interesting or urgent at the moment.

“Who are you? Most people would answer by listing the many things that they do. I’m a rancher/business owner, family person, I play golf, I do artwork, I’m a Christian, I go to church, I go to work…

But if we are to have a Christian world view, then, when we describe ourselves, we would simply say, “I’m a Christian-A follower of Jesus Christ.” We are first and foremost a Christian and the other things that we do are under that main heading. “Because I’m a Christian I have a job that fits into my values as a Christian.” “Because I’m a Christian I spend time with my family to bring them to Jesus.”

God’s Antidote: Not Horizontal but Vertical.

KR03: Grayed Out Religion

KR03 Grayed Out Religion8/9/08

Grayed-out Religion is the idea that there are no absolutes; no black and white, right and wrong. Whatever seems good in a person’s own eyes is good.

Grayed-out Religion contradicts itself. You see the statement that there is no absolute truth is, itself, an absolute statement.

Abraham Lincoln once asked, “How many legs would a sheep have if you called its tail a leg?” “Five!” came the answer. The president then said, “No, it would only have four legs. Calling a tail a leg doesn’t make it one.”

This sermon addresses the important questions relating to postmodernism such as: Is there really a such thing as right and wrong? What is the definition of right and wrong and good and evil? Is sin still a sin if I don’t know it’s a sin? Is sin still a sin if something good comes out of it? Are you too proud to admit that you have sin?

God’s Antidote: Not Grayed but Distinct.

KR02 Traditional Religion7/26/08

Traditional Religion is holding onto our tradition-what we’ve always done or were raised to do-even when it goes against what God says in the Bible. That is, knowing the truth but rejecting it for the sake of tradition.

God’s Antidote: Not Tradition but Truth.

Key Passage: Mark 7:5-9

KR01: Saving Religion7/12/08

Saving Religion is the belief that having membership in the right church brings you salvation. The idea that the religion its self will save you.

People have practiced “Saving Religion” for centuries. Nicodemus was one person who did this. He thought that his position in the church was enough to guarantee him a high place in God’s kingdom. Jesus told him that a religion, or a church, while it might be good cannot save anyone from sin and death. Only that which comes from God can save.

God’s Antidote: Not membership but relationship.

Key Passage: John 3:6-16

“You will not surely die,” hissed Satan in the form of a snake, “For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”—Genesis 3:4, 5. Ever since that fateful deception Satan has been trying to convince us that God wants to keep us down. He wants us to believe that God is against us and that the most frightening place to be when you’re hurting is in the presence of God and His people.  Jesus came to show what God is really like. Today let’s look at one story to catch a glimpse of how God treats hurting people. The main character’s emotional pain in this story came from demon possession, but emotional pain can come from many sources. Regardless of the source, the tenderness of God toward people with hurts is just as strong.

Key Text: Mark 5:1-20
