In 1 Corinthians 10:11 Paul tells us that the reason God inspired the Old Testament stories to be written is for our admonition. This is a series of sermons on the well-known Old Testament stories called, “Ancient Stories/Modern Lessons”. I pray that God will reveal some new truths to us through these old, well-known, stories.

Born, The Lamb12/24/05

Today we will hear from Ephraim, a fictional, first person, conception of a Shepherd from Bethlehem, who heard the announcement of the angel on the hillside that first Christmas. 33 years later He was in Jerusalem to sell his sheep during Passover when he witnessed the crucifixion of Jesus and heard of His resurrection. He became one of the early Christians.

***

Only the sheep raised in Bethlehem were accepted in Jerusalem as sacrifices in the Temple. Therefore the shepherds in the hills of Bethlehem had a special redemptive work. Sins were atoned for (symbolically) by the sacrifice of a lamba lamb from Bethlehem. They were the ones who raised the sheep that were to point forward to the Lamb of God.

One night, a group of these shepherds had put their sheep in folds and were resting in the doorway to the sheep pen when an angel announced that Christ had been born in Bethlehem.

They hurried to the stable to see the Christ. There, wrapped in strips of cloths, was the real Lamb of God. Born in Bethlehem, the only place a sacrificial lamb could be born.

Although the shepherds who worshiped Jesus on the night of his birth probably didnt know it, Jesus was not only their Good Shepherd; He was the real sacrificial Lamb.

Jesus was born on to be the sacrificial lamb for you. No matter how good or bad you are, you share with everyone else in this church and in the world the need to have your sins paid for. You can either do that yourself by dying for your own sinsforeveror you can accept Jesus offer to cleanse your sins by being your sacrificial lamb.

On Earth Peace12/17/05

Hope was scarce and the future bleak but when Jesus came He gave hope and a future. The angels sang, On earth peace, goodwill toward men. Where is this peace? Even as these angels sang about peace uprisings were being planned, Roman soldiers were violently crushing anyone who dared to stand in their way. Even to this day world peace is only a fantasy and most times when someone tries to bring world peace they only end up sparking upheaval.

Christmas, The Old, Old Story12/10/05

Have you ever taken a shortcut just to find out that if you had taken the long way it would have been much better in the end? Im afraid that by allowing pop-culture to define Christmas for us we can loose the true and awesome significance of Jesus first advent. Beyond all the jolly songs and chocolate, gift giving and family gatherings, snowmen and nativity scenes is a powerful message of redemption without which the season would be utterly empty.

So lets start in the very beginning by going to the last Book of the Bible.

This sermon is the first in a series of Christmas sermons called, “When Angels Sing”. This series includes:

The Old, Old Story

December 10

On Earth Peace

December 17

Born, The Lamb

December 24

Key Passage: Revelation 13:8
