Reviving the Third Angel's Message4/26/08

Imagine you’re going to visit a friend at their home for the first time. He’s given you a map with detailed instructions and many landmarks to make sure you don’t get lost. Just as you come to the last turn you see that there is a house that looks exactly like he said his does and it’s exactly where he said it would be. You knock on the door at it is indeed his house. Would you be surprised? Of course not! Yet many people are surprised, even scandalized, when they see the fulfillment of prophecy in the proclamation of the third angel’s message. This is not a new message. In fact in 1889 Ellen white, one of the founders of our church wrote,

“Several have written to me, inquiring if the message of justification by faith is the third angel’s message, and I have answered, ‘It is the third angel’s message in verity.’”–Review and Herald, April 1, 1890.

But sometimes when we preach righteousness by faith people say, “It’s a new, liberal message” or “It’s cheap grace”! I say, “It’s good news-the Gospel.” Today, we’ll spend some talking about that all important message.

$5.00 Car!?!

Imagine I have a friend whose name is Bill. He decides I should have a new car so he goes to the Ford dealer and picks out a brand new shiny red Mustang with all the bells and whistles, pays cash for it and drives it to my house. He tosses me the keys and says, “Here, this is my free gift to you.”

That’s pretty cool, huh? Now, imagine that I say,” That’s too great of a gift, here, let me help pay for it.” and I pull out a five dollar bill and give it to him to help pay for the car. Then I drive the car to another friend’s house and say, “Check out the car my friend Bill and I bought together!”

What an insult to Bill and his gift! Yet many people do the same thing with Jesus’ free gift of salvation. Read or listen to this sermon to find out how!
