Lens of Prophecy Pt. 3 1/26/08

In the great debate of world religions, many people point to the many atrocities done in the past in the name of Christianity, and they say, “See, Christianity isn’t any better than any other religion.” It is true that many sad things have happened in the name of Christianity. We cannot and should not deny that dark part of our history. However, Bible prophecy not only predicted that these things would come about, but also told us who was behind these things and why they happened. In order to gain a helpful understanding in response to our critics, we first need to understand one of the most prominent figures in the book of Revelation–The Little Horn of Daniel also called the Beast of Revelation. The truth of the identity of this power is not only important prophetically and historically, it answers the accusations against Christianity’s past. It also serves as a personal warning for us. When an organization or person begins to be concerned primarily about self-promotion instead of God’s mission, they are opening themselves up to be used by the devil, like this church was. They didn’t want to do wrong, but they compromised to the place where they didn’t know right. Christianity did not persecute; Satan hijacked Christianity and persecuted.

LP02: The Skeleton

Lens of Prophecy Pt. 2 1/12/08

Fast Fact: Most kinds of octopi “have almost entirely soft bodies with no internal skeleton. They have neither a protective outer shell like the nautilus, nor any vestige of an internal shell or bones, like cuttlefish or squids. A beak, similar in shape to a parrot’s beak, is the only hard part of their body.”–Wikipedia.com. Because of this, a 600 lb Octopus can squeeze itself through a hole the size of a quarter or transform itself into the shape and texture of whatever they want in their immediate surroundings for camouflage! Like the Octopus, if you don’t have the skeleton of prophecy in place you can make it say or go whatever or wherever you want it to–but that doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re getting the right picture. In this sermon we’ll find the right skeleton off of which to build our understanding of prophecy.

LP01: “Why?”

Lens of Prophecy Pt. 1 1/5/08

Possibly the three most important letters in the English language are W, H & Y. With these simple letters we learn what life’s about, discern truth from error, and build relationships. Asking why is important if you don’t want to be led down a bad path. It’s the difference between just blindly accepting what you were taught as a kid and knowing truth for yourself. One of the best places to start asking why is God’s word. And the most important person direct a “why” toward is Jesus.

This coming year I’d like to spend some time studying the major themes prophetic books of Daniel and Revelation as they relate to us today. Since both these books are rather long this series will be an on again, off again type series. But first I’d like to ask the all important question:

Why study prophecy
