Steps to ChristAround thanksgiving time we often think about crops and harvest. The fall harvest has become a symbol to Americans of God’s abundant provision. Jesus used agriculture as an illustration of a Christian’s spiritual growth in Christ.

Today is the eighth in our series, “Steps to Christ: How to be ready for Jesus to come.” We’ve talked a lot about getting to know Jesus. We’ve talked about how salvation is only through our faith in God’s grace. Now we will switch our focus onto how to keep with God once we’re saved. We start with today’s topic, “Growing Up Into Christ”.

Thanksgiving in Jerusalem--Recovering from loss11/18/06

At thanksgiving time we think about pilgrims and religious freedom. It is a time when we celebrate abundance and, sometimes, we think of those less fortunate. A heart of thankfulness is something that God wants us all to have. But today let’s leave Plymouth Rock and the pilgrims and go to another thanksgiving celebration. This one in Jerusalem. But before we get into our thanksgiving story I’d like to pose a question, “How do you give thanks when there’s nothing to be thankful about?” That’s a vital question that some Levites had to answer.

When everyone else around us seems especially thankful and happy during the holiday season, we often get the idea that our grief is inappropriate. So we deny it and try to act like everything’s ok when, in fact, things are anything but ok.

This is a message about how to deal with loss and grief so that you can find a thankful heart again.

Key Passage: Ezra 3-6

Matthew Orian, our not-so-guest speaker for this week is from Platte Valley Academy where he serves as the boy’s dean and teaches some classes.

The recording computer had some problems so there are some weird places in the sermon but it’s understandable.

There is no handout for this week.

Steps to Christ: The Test of Discipleship11/4/06

Steps to ChristAs a kid I used to love static electricity. I remember turning off the lights in the church’s hallway and scuffling down the hall to the darkest corner then touching a light switch screw. The goal was to see how far the spark would jump. Although you cannot see electricity it is evident when it is present because of the results.

Jesus told about something else that can’t be seen but its results are seen. This is the Test of Discipleship.
