Legacy of a Veteran5/27/06

In his song, “American Soldier” Toby Keith asserts that “freedom don’t come free.” On this Memorial Day weekend we take time to remember that freedom truly doesn’t come free.

Cemeteries and monuments all attest that our freedoms were bought at the price of other’s blood. Soldiers die to secure the freedom of the nation and our consciences. Christians are martyred to secure our freedom to know the truth. Jesus went to the cross to secure freedom from sin and freedom to live eternally.

When we reflect on those who have died to bring us freedom it does something to us. It changes the way we think and, hopefully, it changes the way we act.

Key Passage: Hebrews 12:1-4

Valentine’s War Veterans:

This area has its share of veterans. A trip to the Valentine War Memorial told of soldiers from our area who fought in one of five wars. 4 fought in the Mexican American War, 579 in WWI 25 of whom died and 933 in WWII 41 of whom died. Three from the Korean War gave their lives and 5 from the Vietnam War were killed. I found no statistics of wars after Vietnam. This legacy of war veterans challenges us to: * Appreciate our freedom more * Be a better citizen * Feel more patriotic A similar challenge is passed to us by another group of freedom fighters, Godly martyrs. We will look at that today.

From One Forerunner to Another5/20/06

This is a first person sermon. We were visited by John the Baptist the forerunner of Jesus, the Messiah.

He shared his experience as the forerunner of Christ including his discouragement and how Jesus encouraged him to keep going.

He shared this with us because in a very real sense we are also forerunners of Christ like John the Baptist was. Because we are called to prepare the world for Jesus’ second coming. We share some of the same discouragements that John had and can be encouraged by the same words of Christ that helped John.

Sorry, there is no handout for this sermon

Key Passage: Isaiah 40:3-5

Got a Problem?5/13/06

Have you ever felt ripped off? Maybe you were charged too much at a store or missed out on something important that you really wanted. Sometimes we can feel like we’ve been ripped off as Christians because we’ve never seen Jesus. We didn’t get to walk and talk with Jesus like the disciples did. We haven’t felt the hands of Jesus touch us and bring healing to our bodies. But are we really at a disadvantage because we live in the 21st century instead of the 1st? How can Jesus help us with our problems in our century? The gospel of John answers this question.

Key Passage: John 4:46-54
